About half of this garbage can be placed into a compost tumbler and returned to the soil. So for each person, that is about 840 pounds of compostable material per year.
With over 300 million people plus living in this country, that is 252 billion pounds of garbage that could be composted, but instead is being hauled off to landfills. I will continue next time with an estimate on how much energy that saves. But first I have to find out how much energy the actual garbage trucks use. But really think about the compost tumbler, ok?
Til next time
Hal

How Composting Saves Energy research

My project is coming along. So far I've determined that composting your organic material, including yard waste, saves about 5 gallons of fuel per month per household. I'm working on the details now. If everyone in the United States did composting, imagine the energy that would be saved. Make that half. I think even concieving of everyone here doing something to help save the environment is a little unrealistic. I will keep you updated. I just try to get people to think about all of those garbage trucks going down the road spewing diesel fumes into the air, and then try to imagine that number of trucks cut in half because, if everyone has a compost tumbler, they won't be needed.
Hal Merrill
http://www.composttumblersite.com/
